Substitution of lightweight composite materials for the metal traditionally used for aircraft skin eliminates much of the electromagnetic shielding inherently provided by the older structural designs and tends to leave sensitive electrical circuits and components much more vulnerable to the effects of man-made and natural electromagnetic interference. Fiber optic transmission lines, in combination with electrically passive fiber optic sensors, provide a promising solution to this problem by eliminating the need for electromagnetic shielding of the cabling, and by eliminating most of the devices usually needed for protecting the electronic circuits from conducted electromagnetic interference. This paper describes an experimental drop-in fiber optic system developed to replace the primary electrical throttle lever angle sensor and electrical wiring used for control and monitoring of a commercial jet engine.
