This paper describes an algorithm for locating and sizing flaws in steel structures, in particular offshore oil rigs. The algorithm depends on the use of electronic beam steering and a personal computer mouse to correlate flaw data with position. The mouse is rolled over the surface to be investigated. At each new location, the probe collects data and relates it back to a reference position. After a number of samples, the process reveals a sharp image of the inside of the material. The paper will introduce the hardware required for this algorithm, and proceed to detail the algorithm developed.
