In keeping with the DoD requirement for increased tactical flexibility, the U.S. Army CECOM has developed a standardized high-mobility Intermediate Forward Test Equipment (IFTE) for testing weapon system Line Replaceable Units (LRUs) close to their operational units. The IFTE program will implement the next generation of automatic test equipment, and is specifically designed to fill a void that now exists at the intermediate direct support maintenance level. Owing to its wide range of test capability and its extensive planned applications, it will eventually become the preferred ATE for use at all Army maintenance levels. This two-part paper summarizes IFTE system design and program management. The technical part describes the IFTE mission, system concept and technical innovations. The management part gives an overview of IFTE organization, milestones, and plans for applying this generic high-mobility test system to various weapon systems.
