Southern Railway made a major management commitment in 1978 to eliminate pole lines from their right-of-way wherever possible. This is the story of how that far-reaching decision was made and how it has affected the signal system. In particular, it has brought about major changes in the type of equipment used to control wayside signals and controlled costs. This has occurred without reducing safety and, in fact, has enhanced reliability.
