With magnetic levitation (MAGLEV) technology for urban applications having progressed from a laboratory curiosity to a product that has arrived on the market, it is an opportune time to consider the question of its market. Urban transportation in many areas is characterized by an overwhelming dependence upon the automobile. And in nearly all cases where rapid growth occurs, communities have great difficulty in adequately providing the necessary roadway capacity to accommodate the automobile traffic. In addition, there are some scenarios where the automobile is simply not desired, or is impractical. In addressing these problem areas, it appears that MAGLEV technology has something to offer. In the case of accommodating automobile traffic, the cost of providing roadway capacity can be considerable. The cost of providing and maintaining this capacity via a MAGLEV technology, in some cases, may be less. Constructing automobile intercepts/parking facilities at points where automobile traffic concentrates to the level where additional roadway capacity is required, and connecting these with major trip generation sites by MAGLEV peoplemovers, may be of economic advantage to developers, communities, and travellers.
