Analysis shows that a cage reaction rail provides performance advantages over the aluminum-capped solid steel rail of a single-sided linear induction motor (LIM). However, the construction of a cage rail is more intricate than that of an aluminum capped rail, and would be more costly. Nevertheless, short distances of the cage rail could conceivably serve as a 'helper' over track sections requiring high thrust. The authors present two models for the cage rail performance prediction. The first model assumes that secondary currents are carried only across conductive bars. Also, the nonuniform magnetic flux distribution is taken into account. The second model uses a layer structure in which the top layer is given anisotropic conductivity and permeability corresponding to the periodic cage/solid-steel structure. The equations for the rail impedance and LIM performance were obtained from the two-dimensional electromagnetic field theory.
