The drive system consists of an induction traction machine (ITM) with squirrel cage rotor. Both rotor and strator are suspended in bearings for rotation. An additional feature is the electromagnetic clutch to facilitate short circuiting of the induction traction machine for direct locked drive conditions from the peak power source PS via the traction machine. The peak power source (in this case a pressure vessel) is used during accelaration and braking, ensuring peak shaving on the low level source, in this case a battery, losses are reduced and the energy efficiency of the battery increased. A battery fed inverter supplies the induction traction machine via sliprings fitted to the 'stator', Hunt (1). Power flow can take place from the battery through the inverter and over the air gap of the induction traction machine to reach the wheels under continuous operation, when the stator will be stationary and the rotor (and wheels) rotating synchronously. Speed control is achieved through variable frequency supplied by the inverter to the induction traction machine. During acceleration and braking power flow is routed from and to the pressure vessel via hydraulic machines and/or through the induction traction machine. The inverter has a continuous rating of 15 kVA and feeds the traction machine from a lead-acid battery of nominal capacity 160 A-h at 144 V:
