The use of real time simulators for training aircraft pilots is now well established. A particular area of difficulty is, however, the training of military aircrew in flying at the very low levels demanded by modern military tactics. A simulator is particularly desirable in this application because of the danger and nuisance involved in flow flying by real aircraft. The RAE at Farnborough have developed such a simulator using a contoured model board to represent the terrain, the pilot's biew being obtained from a miniaturised TV camera moving over the board. (An alternative approach would be to use computer generated imagery and this the likely way forward in future developments of this nature). However, in order to represent realistically the pilot's task in a war situation it is necessary to include also the threats to which pilot is exposed. For example, he may be illuminated by a number of radars and attacked by anti-aircraft fire or surface to air missiles. The avoidance of destruction by these defence units adds to the pilot's already high work load. It is with aspect that the present simulation is concerned.
