The factors, which affect the conductor temperature in OCS electrification systems, have been addressed in this paper, and those which can be neglected for practical study purposes identified. The following is a summary of the approaches and methods outlined in this paper: 1. the varying load, typical of transit railroad systems, must be assessed, instead of the steady state rms value. 2. conductor temperatures must be calculated over a 24-hour period by applying the intermittent loading method and taking into account the varying feeder currents during rush-peak hours and off-peak hours; 3. current distribution between OCS conductors should be calculated, assuming that the contact wire is worn 30 %; 4. skin and proximity effects, magnetic and corona heating should be neglected because of the values are insignificant; 5. solar heating should be calculated for still air, because the coincidence of high solar heating with low convective cooling is possible; 6. solar heating varies with the sun azimuth and altitude, which are functions of latitude, declination and hour angle of the Sun. 7. radiative cooling in still air is less than 30 % of the total heat loss. By increasing the value of wind velocity, the effect of radiative cooling decreases.
