Using commercially available components, we have developed a processing system to meet certain goals: (1) high input data rates, about 750 k samples/second each for 3 concurrent real-time jobs, (2) flexibility to handle different input formats with minimum reconfiguration, and (3) capacity to handle concurrent acoustic model development and other general-purpose operations. The system is based on 2 DEC VAX 11/780s running the standard VAX/VMS operating system. One VAX has an Aptec I/O computer with attached array processors for collecting and reducing data from analog or high density digital recorders. This VAX sets up the I/O computer and array processors to do time to frequency conversion, interpolation of bad array elements, beamforming, signal/replica correlation, etc. Program development is in Fortran or Fortran-like languages. A subset of the real-time system may be used for a compact, less powerful field system. The second VAX handles acoustic model development and further analysis of previously reduced data. Both VAXs are on the NRL network for access to the NRL Cray XMP and other remote computers.
