Towed thermistor arrays provide a two-dimensional cross-section of the ocean temperature field. Such measurements allow insight into the physical dynamics of oceanic processes. By combining a signal processing algorithm with a false color graphical display, pictures of the temperature variance field are produced which accurately portray the patchy nature of the ocean. Digital imaging techniques are then applied to the patch pictures to isolate individual patches. Once the patches have been isolated, a variety of statistical parameters can be calculated to describe the patch structure.
