An integrated circuit sensor utilizing the Hall-effect is investigated for use in monitoring injection needle movement. The development, construction and operation of the sensor are described. The digital type output is compared to the analog needle movement signal through data obtained with an especially instrumented KCA pintel type injector. The sensor signal is analyzed for use as a beginning of injection timing signal and the duration of the signal is evaluated for determining fuel consumption or load. The sensor is shown to provide the signals necessary for the forthcoming diesel electronic closed loop controls.
