The vehicle manufacturer, the battery manufacturer and the user often have differing criteria waiting to be satisfied by the 'fuel' gauge. For example: The vehicle manufacturer may wish to limit discharge to 70 % because of critical component susceptibility to low voltage degradation; the battery manufacturer may be happy with 80 % as a compromise between five year life guarantees and 'just adequate' capacity; and the user may wish to frequently drive down to 90 % because of marginal sizing and frequent emergencies. In this case, the user must be willing to accept the high component failure rate and shortened battery life for the sake of a continuous operation. However, obeying the 'fuel'gauge will still prevent ending up with dead batteries.
