One of the main characteristics of sound that has propagated through the ocean are the large fluctuations of intensity that it exhibits. These fluctuations are due to different causes such as scattering by the changing waves on the sea surface, reflection from an irregular ocean floor and interaction with features in the interior of the ocean such as sound channels, internal waves, turbulence, and layering of various kinds.
