This paper reports on research into the interactions between pedestrians crossing a street at an intersection and vehicles attempting to turn into that street from an adjacent approach. The method adopted involved both theoretical considerations and detailed empirical data. The pedestrian normally shares the green time of the traffic stream travelling in the same direction. The density of the pedestrian stream crossing the intersection has a marked bearing on the ability of a turning vehicle to perform its manoeuvre. Thus the pedestrian inflicts some delay on the turning vehicle which is dependent on three groups of factors, namely pedestrian factors, turning characteristics, environmental factors. The various factors involvedare discussed in detail below and a theoretical model is described which incorporates these factors to make estimates of the passenger car equivalents of vehicles attempting to turn through a flow of pedestrians.
