Philips Research Laboratories have been involved in the field of high accuracy direction finding (HADF) for many years. Much of the early work was aimed at navigation systems, particularly landing aids for STOL aircraft. An example is the MADGE landing system, now in service with the Royal Navy. More recently the work has been directed towards the use of HADF in Electronic Support Measures (ESM) systems. These systems are used by the armed forces to locate and identify microwave signals. Typically they operate over bandwidths in excess of an octave, anywhere in the frequency range 0.5 to 18 GHz. With the development of better braodband microwave components it became possible to consider building interferometer systems with suitable bandwidths. This paper presents results obtained with two such systems, operating in a number of different scenarios. The first of these was built to measure the effects of propagation on DF accuracy. Measurements were made over both land and sea paths using transmitters whose positions were generally known very accurately. The second system is installed in the Mobile ESM Laboratory which has been taken on a number of field trials and has been used to track various targets without prior knowledge of their position.
