Gallium arsenide MMICs are just now becoming available as off-the-shelf items. Their instantaneous bandwidth performance is generally superior to that of their discrete counterpart hybrid circuits. In noise figure and maximum power output, however, they have not yet equaled the hybrid devices. Proposed class-B push-pull distributed MMICs, however, may substantially exceed the hybrid technology in power-added efficiency by virtue of the nearly lossless virtual common ground. The most efficacious properties of the MMICs are that of providing new functional capability and providing A/D converters, shift registers, and random access memories with speeds sufficient to implement rf microwave memory.
