The tests made on the road network in Aix-en-Provence underline the possibilities of improving journey times and energetic performances of vehicles during peak hours by putting into service adapted traffic signals. For this specific case, the results show the efficiency of optimized signal timing plans. Performances of the green wave introduced by the operators remain relatively satisfactory. On the contrary, the adaptive strategy, originally installed at the moment of introducing the system - appears to be difficult to maintain in practice, particularly during peak hours due to its complex character. Confronted with this analysis, the operators reply that an efficient strategy is one that fits well into its environment, that is easy to put into service and to readjust according to the evolution of traffic flow in the network. So this statement militates in favour of developing traffic control methods well adapted to the Technical Departments of medium-sized cities, as well for the putting into service and readjusting as for maintenance.
