During the last decade or two computer based traffic control systems have been introduced in cities throughout the world. In all cases these systems have had the common objective of reducing traffic congestion and delays. The similarities between these systems would suggest that traffic problems are much the same in all cities and that the practice of traffic control is a genuinely international activity. In the UK traffic performance in cities is in most cases determined by what happens at junctions, many of which are controlled by traffic signals. The lengths or road between junctions are not normally a constraint and the task of traffic control is to improve junction performance using whatever means are available. This paper is a review of traffic control in Nottinghamshire and is intended to highlight certain methods which have developed from local circumstances. Specific references are also made to design developments described by practitioners in other parts of the UK.
