It is becoming increasingly common to provide flared approaches at traffic signals and roundabouts. In many cases this procedure requires changes to the road and pavement layout, resulting in considerable expenditure. Clearly such changes are only worthwhile if they produce a marked improvement in the performance of the junction. The objectives of this study were to develop realistic simulation and simplified mathematical models to estimate vehicular delays, queue lengths and saturation flow profiles, thereby producing quantitative evidence of the advantages which flared approaches have in providing extra opportunities for vehicles to utilize the full width of the stop-line at the start of the green phase of the traffic signals.
