First-generation avionic LANs such as MIL-STD-1553 and GAM-T-101 (the French 'Digibus') will be unable to satisfy the high data rates and larger systems that will be required in future aircraft. The Society of Automotive Engineers is presently in the process of defining a new standard High-Speed Data Bus to complement or replace the first-generation systems. This paper reports on the work that has been carried out at LAAS in collaboration with the Electronique Serge Dassault company to contribute to this new standard. We discuss the design decisions that led us to our proposition for a high-speed token bus. Specific features of this proposition are: a physical layer based on CATV on fiber-optic technology, a twin virtual ring to manage periodic data streams and a partially centralized ring recovery function.
