A microprocessor is used to monitor and regulate the power transfer between the battery and the wheel of the electric vehicle. In the propulsion mode, battery discharge is measured in terms of net reduction of battery capacity. In the charging mode, the microprocessor controls the battery charging rate in accordance to the ampere-hour law. The battery's electrolyte bubble rate is monitored and adjusted which in turn establishes the rate at which electrolyte density is replenished in the pores of the plates or grids of the typical lead-acid battery. The appropriate data are continuously updated and stored in the microprocessor memory. Near-terms batteries currently being developed by the U.S. industry, such as the zinc bromide flow battery and the nickel-iron nonaqueous battery, probably will be the replacement of the present-day lead-acid battery. It is reasonable to assume that these batteries have an improved temperature stability and are otherwise easier to monitor. This should simplify EV control scenarios in the future.
