A flywheel energy storage unit has been developed which performs as a form, fit, and function replacement for a Nickel-Cadmium battery. The battery, which provides a source of uninterrupted power to the Inertial Navigation System of an aircraft has proven unreliable in field use. Corrosion of the terminals, self-discharge and premature loss of capacity have resulted in the necessity for frequent maintenance. The Inertial Power Supply Unit (IPSU) has a designed operating lifetime of 20000 hrs. Additional advantages of technology and unlimited charge/discharge cycling, long shelf life, and capability for monitoring both state-of-charge and bearing condition.
