Ford Aerospace and Yardney have established the initial design of a bipolar Ni-H2 battery under a development contract sponsored by NASA-LeRC. Studies have shown the bipolar configuration has good performance characteristics relative to other energy storage systems being considered for future high power satellites. Material evaluations and design trade-offs have been performed. A scale model of the initial design has been assembled and tested prior to fabrication of a full size 75 Ah, 10 cell battery. Results of these tests indicate the design will meet performance expectations.
