A newly and successfully introduced microprocessor-controlled, four-speed automatic transmission with lockup clutch improving fuel economy and quiet vehicle operation is described. A new strategy for precision lockup clutch control employing feed-back action which senses the speed difference between input and output shafts of the torque converter is described. The method and results of simulation study conducted to analyze the system's characteristics and improve the feed-back control stability and response is presented.
