The General Electric Company, under contract to the Department of Energy, will design, fabricate and test an electrically heated Ground Demonstration System (GDS) for the Modular Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generator (RTG). The modular RTG design features improved thermoelectric materials and devices (multicouples) to achieve specific power greater than 3.5 watts per pound. General Electric is developing this design concept for flight applications. The GDS will be the device used to project specific power, structural and electrical performance for the flight MOD-RTG configuration. A more detailed description of the GDS and modular RTG flight designs, including performance projections, are presented.
