A unique sodium sulfur cell design has been developed which enhances the potential cell energy density to over 200 Wh/kg and, most importantly, has a dramatic impact on projected vehicle battery reliability. Performance and reliability results on previous generations of cells show that long term, stable resistance and capacity maintained in cells operating for up to 2500 cycles. The essential design aspects of vehicular and utility batteries are presented, together with projected performance. The combined advances in cell technology, cell design and battery design make it possible to plan for a vehicle battery which does not require cell replacement for up to a five year period. These advances have eased many of the battery design constraints and the resulting design proposals produce compact, efficient and high performance batteries with a flexible packaging capability.
