Developments in vehicle design and automotive electronics are having significant effects upon the driver-vehicle interface. The increasing complexity of the interface raises important ergonomic questions. This paper looks at some specific examples of man-car communication to highlight these issues and draws upon the work of the Automotive Ergnomics Unit at the Institute for Consumer Ergonomics. It is argued that the ergonomist has a central role to play in the development of electronic devices and systems. The ergonomist can provide information not only on design specification but also on the devices or systems required by the driver.
