This paper provides an overview of the electromagnetic interference-electromagnetic compatibility (EMI/EMC) condition as it relates to automotive electronic systems. It considers the electromagnetic radiated, conducted, transient, electrostatic and structural environments in the automotive domain. It reviews pertinent EMC standards and recommended practices that currently exist in the United States. Hardware options for effective EMC design are also reviewed. Among these options are shielding, grounding, bonding, filtering, and interconnects. Special emphasis is placed on the role of interconnects, which includes cable (also fiber optic cable) and the associated connectors.
