This paper describes preliminary studies into a potentially cheap, virtually maintenance-free, low mass dynamic brake made feasible by the availability of stable, high energy density permanent magnets. It takes the form of an axle mounted permanent magnet alternator onto which load resistors are switched to control braking. Energy dissipated in the load and as machine losses absorbes the kinetic energy of the vehicle to give the desired braking effect. Because of dynamic movements in the bogie suspension system, the alternator is an axial-field configuration, with the permanent magnet rotor (s) clamped directly to the axle, and the stator supported from the bogie frame. The stator is of a simple design and carries a three-phase gramme-ring winding on a laminated core. The advantages of the proposed system include: (1) low maintenance requirements; (2) low mass to be supported by the axle; (3) ability to develop near constant torque over a wide speed range, by simple control of load resistors; (4) Capability for operating at very high power densities for short periods; (5) tolerance to shock and vibration.
