The design and development of a series of complex electronic systems, each of which would be subjected to severe electromagnetic environment, resulted in the introduction of five uncommon shielding techniques. First there was the need to interconnect a master control enclosure with multiple peripheral enclosure from a single connector interface and maintain total system shielding without the use of a distribution box. A second situation required a method of shielding and filtering electro-explosive devices from a high level electromagnetic environment within a very limited envelope and with a minimum of mass. A third shielding challenge was sealing the bearing plane between the rotor and stator of a slip-ring assembly. The inevitable corrosion associated between almost any conductive gasket and its mating surfaces in a salt atmosphere generated a fourth unique shield improvement. The fifth shielding idea was developed to prevent the inadvertant ignition of electrically primed ammunition.
