This paper describes the application of two fundamental techniques to stabilize structural feedback oscillations in homing missile autopilots. Phase stabilization uses the dynamics of the actuator and rate gyro to stabilize both first and second mode instabilities. Gain stabilization is used to attenuate the first and second mode peaks, which stabilizes the system and minimizes the effects of any noise generated in the rate loop by the electronics or by the mechanical components. The trade-offs necessary to accomplish gain stabilization are discussed.
