Road traffic to today lacks some kind of information and communication system which is already an integral part of other traffic carriers. A very accurate picture of the traffic situation in a road network can be obtained by measuring journey speed, traffic density and dissipation in each of its sections. In this paper a new system was introduced which allows the re-identification of platoons of vehicles with limited requirements concerning the capacity of computers and data paths needed. This is achieved by means of pattern recognition and correlation methods. In that way, the above mentioned reliable data of the traffic situation in each road section can be gathered and may be collected in a traffic information center. This information can be used for centralized traffic monitoring of the road network, however, it can also be transmitted to individual drivers to assist them in finding their optimal route to a specific destination. Thus such an automatic system for traffic surveillance offers a wide range of applications for authorities as well for individual users.
