The introduction of satellite navigation systems offers in principle optimal conditions for the location of land vehicles. Twenty-four hour coverage, unlimited number of users, high accuracy and no local installations are some of the advantages of these systems. There are still open problems, however, concerning satellite navigation in urban environments in general, such as multipath propagation, satellite shielding and interference. The influence of these effects on GPS NAVSTAR measurements and the consequences for the design of a receiver for this specific application are subject to this paper. On the basis of a review about relevant GPS functions typical urban environments will be described to identify their influences. It is shown, that the shielding of satellites in city regions is the most critical situation. A visibility of less than three satellites and a significant reduction of accuracy can be expected. The results lead to a proposal of modified receiver functions, which could help to overcome the identified problems.
