Pilots of future aircraft, particularly combat aircraft, will need to become high-level managers of complex flying systems as the amounts of information which must be integrated and the number of tasks that must be performed increase beyond realistic mental and physical limits. A major problem is how to acquire, structure, and apply the knowledge base needed by an expert flight management system capable of operating in this highly dynamic domain. Experience gained in prototyping the Emergency Procedures Expert System (EPES) has led to a rule and goal paradigm for representing knowledge that is well suited to a multi-level problem such as flight management. Applying this paradigm to the domain of emergency procedures, we have been able to rapidly construct a knowledge base capable of demonstrating the resolution of conflict between multiple, simultaneous demands.
