Many studies have been performed on the subject of All-Electric Aircraft (AEA): an all-electric Space Shuttle, all-electric military and civil transports, and most recently, the Integrated Digital Electric Airplane study. A major distinction of the AEA is the deletion of the hydraulic systems which establishes a need for electric primary flight control actuators. Several laboratory endeavors have resulted in electric actuation systems which appear to be viable candidates for primary flight control usage. However, actual flight test demonstrations are still required. This discussion reviews the Lockheed-Georgia programs involving electrically actuated primary flight controls, the systems themselves, and some of the design considerations for the electronics, motors, and actuators.
