THE C-5 aircraft design has incorporated many state of the art advances relative to the C-141 or any other large subsonic aircraft. These were necessitated by the very broad range of functions to be performed and the many challenging performance guarantees. Ranging from advances developed to meet the required weight to those needed to achieve the goals of the sophisticated guidance systems, these advances generally required extension or refinement of known concepts without further basic research. Full exploitation of these concepts has necessitated, however, a completely unprecedented amount of development testing of components, assemblies and subsystems. A number of these state of the art advances are described here by appropriate category.
