Assigning in a realistic way a known travel demand to a given transit network plays a central role in the problem of designing public transportation systems. In fact, due to its relevant complexity, such a design problem is normally approached by trial and error procedures in which tentative solutions are sequentially formulated, evaluated and improved. The paper presents a descriptive assignment model which is sufficiently accurate to give a reasonable dependable description of the transit system behaviour for the purpose of evaluating its performance, and easy to handle both in terms of computing resources and amount of data required, in order to allow to test an appropriately large number of tentative solutions for the design problem. The model is based on a zone aggregated description of the travel demand and of the network topology, and uses a detailed behavioural description of the route choice process. In particular line parallels and interchanges, as well as the possibility of spreading each origin-destination demand on a reasonable set of different routes are considered, in order to take into account all the details that have necessarily got lost by aggregating data. Computational experience using the model on real cases is also presented.
