A robotic system is a new method of performing a process and it is the process that is the important element of the cell. Robotics make the cell expensive and justifications dependent on improvements in performance and environment. These are not obtainable unless the system first, controls its quality by continuous monitoring all its elements and, secondly achieves a high utilisation. In the leak testing example, the cell is carrying out a Quality Control funcion and it is very necessary to ensure constant performance. This is achieved both by monitoring the process equipment and by checking sensor zero and calibrating each car at a test leak point. The utilisation of the cell is such that 100 % of cars are to be tested and the insensitive is that a water test must be conducted on those cars not tested; this is demanding on man power resources. In practice better than 98 % system availability was achieved in recent monitored period of 3 months.
