The field of aeronautical satellite communications (aerosatcoms) has been enlivened more by debate than solid achievement since the Aerosat venture crashed in the 1970s. The next three years, by contrast, should witness a fairly dramatic shift in the development of both civil and military aerosatcoms. The increased power and performance of the next generation satellites e.g. the military SKYNET 4 and civil INMARSAT, will facilitate a reduction in the size, complexity and cost of airborne terminals and could pave the way to operational and commercially-viable applications. The paper examines recent UK developments in the military field in particular for evidence that earlier technical difficulties are being overcome.
