The feasibility of an Artificial Intelligence approach to ATC has been demonstrated. Within the scope of the evaluation carried out the Aid achieves its objectives of: Responding adequately to unplanned situations; Accepting aircraft deviation from control instructions; Accepting human controller intervention; Being highly resilient under pressure. The overall process of control which is used has relevance to the control of other situations where information is uncertain and control is imprecise. The architecture used can be mapped to a general model of command and control processes, and indicates one approach to the application of Artificial Intelligence techniques to the control of situations traditionally requiring human skills. Some essential differences between an Artificial Intelligence and a traditional approach have emerged, in both advantageous and disadvantageous respects.
