To a motor car buyer, driver or manufacturer, the perceived quality of the action 'feels' of the driver operable controls (mostly switches) is an important issue. Controls with a poor or vague action 'feel' may result in the driver not being certain that he has operated a particular control, or a switch position has been fully engaged (possibly giving rise to contact problems). A range of test rigs was therefore developed some time ago with a view to producing a graphical representation of 'feel' for the various types of switch commonly used in motor vehicles. These rigs were manually operated, but fitted with torque/angle or force/travel transducers, the outputs from which were used to operate a conventional XY plotter. This equipment proved reasonably successful, but required skilled interpretation of the generated graphs in deciding if a particular test sample was acceptable. Also, because of the different speeds of operation by different operators, no two tests were conducted under exactly the same conditions, giving rise to slight differences in the results.
