The performance of a transit system is characterized by criteria as safety of operations, vehicle headways, trip quality (given by travel times and riding comfort), energy consumption. The system performance has to be achieved by a suitable control system which is able to fulfil the functions 'automatic vehicle protection', 'automatic vehicle operation' and 'automatic vehicle supervision'. The complexity of the various functions and different temporal priorities lead to a distributed multilevel structure of the control system. This contribution deals with the use of computers for real time processing within all the three levels of a transit control system. It is realized by lower level spatially distributed subsystems with on-board and wayside equipment and higher level supervision centres. Advanced magnetically levitated and urban rail transit systems are applications of the outlined computer control system.
