The fundamental active sonar problem is to discriminate wanted target returns - echo - against reverberation and other backscatter from unwanted targets. This can be done by reducing reverberation volume using high angular and range resolution. It should be noted that the same requirements are valid to discriminate between multiple sonar targets.
