As part of the Space Station effort at the NASA Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center (JSC), a high-voltage, high-frequency ac system has been studied and a design concept generated. This system has a 200-V, 20-kHz primary bus. It also has secondary buses of 400 Hz, 60 Hz, 50 Hz, and dc in areas of the Space Station in which large groupings of equipment requiring those frequencies and voltages are located. At each user/subsystem power interface, a utility power controller (UPC) will monitor the power level and a conversion circuit will convert the bus power to a form compatible with the user/subsystem frequency and voltage requirements. The details of this ac power management and distribution (PMAD) concept, including the power management portion of the system, are discussed herein. Redundancy, integration of power sources, management of loads, and physical layouts are also presented. The advantages of high-frequency ac are discussed as well as the manner in which a power distribution system in space could evolve to accomodate higher power levels as power requirements increase with increasing space utilization.
