The Venus Radar Mapper spacecraft is to be launched in April 1988. After a 117-day cruise phase to the planet Venus, the spacecraft will map the surface for 243 days. This paper describes the design of the electrical power subsystem for the spacecraft. The combination of spacecraft mapping orientation, solar occultation periods, attitude control calibration periods, data playback periods, and the use of a one degree-of-freedom solar array results in defining three energy balance situations for array sizing and depth of discharge on the NiCd batteries. The design is also affected by the 117-day cruise phase as solar intensity varies from 1.0 sun near Earth to 1.89 suns at Venus.
