Performance, design, and weight characteristics of various candidate radioisotope dynamic power systems (RDPS) are compared. These include the Dynamic Isotope Power System (DIPS), the Brayton Isotope Power System (BIPS), the Stirling Isotope Power System (SIPS) and the Organic Rankine Cycle Electric Power System (ORCEPS). Power levels considered are in the 1.0 to 1.5 kWe range and are based upon previous development programs. Design features of each system are discussed with emphasis placed on their impact on performance and overall weight. Peak cycle and heat rejection temperature are also reviewed. An assessment of the achievable system specific weights is made so that spacecraft designers may select the RDPS that best fits their vehicle requirements.
