Pilots of today's fighter aircrat are often presented more information than can effectively be used and are often required to perform more tasks than are physically possible. This has led to a need for the automation of low-level tasks, thereby raising pilots to a higher level in managing aircraft systems. Key issues in the design of an automated system in the cockpit are the interface to the pilot, integrating the automated system with other aircraft systems, and representing commonsense knowledge. There are many tasks that can be considered as candidates for automation; here we describe a system for automating in-flight emergency procedures. To test our approach, a prototype of the system was developed. The automation of an F-16 emergency procedure is presented as an example.
