A practical engineering technique has been described for evaluating spacecraft power systems in terms of the percentage loss in output resulting from any single-point failure. The use of failure modes and effects analysis to calculate actual quantitative power system performance losses caused by single-point failures, as described, is believed to be a new and more useful application of this technique. It appears to be an important various system topologies, and can also be used to improve existing power systems by highlighting risky areas. The various means of damage control described here (diode isolation, fusing, etc.) can be evaluated numerically to demonstrate that a certain level of power output can be maintained following mostly any rationally conceived single-point fault. This can turn a potentially catastrophic event into a controlled and variable situation, with the spacecraft mission still intact.
