The Fail-Safe Fibre Optical Transmission System described in this paper is developed with the aim of carrying safety information for signalling along the railways in Denmark. The system will replace the present generation of cobber cable based transmission systems. The reason for introducing a new generation of transmission system is primarily that the Danish Railways are beginning to use electrified trains and therefore expect electrical noise problems in their existing cobber cables. The basic standard, which has been set for the transmission system is, that it meets the present safety standard provided by relay technology and the appropriate cobber cables. This includes microcomputer systems which have to operate in a secure way against single and multiple failures. Even though the transmission system is specifically dedicated to the Danish Railways the safety principles used and the system concept developed can be applied universally.
